Riding the Wheelchair to Nowhere
She has no idea where she is headed
in the wheelchair she’s been in forever.
Pushed by the daughter with a trembling lip
they progress up the hill and on towards the trees,
she clinging on grimly with the pain in her hip
and little notion of what she’s just seen,
though still proud of her birthplace overseas
wherever that may have been.
Stripped to some essence of movement and pain
today she will fade from this lane
leaving tall weeds and the unkempt grasses
to nod in the breeze as she passes
never knowingly to recognise this scene again,
a blur of a figure hunched in the rain.
